Interview with Liz Earle

The Queen of Skincare Liz Earle, has a new book The Good Gut Guide which was published by Orion Spring in May 2017, and went straight in as the No1 Bestseller on Amazon for Popular Medicine, and it really is a fantastic read.

How and when did you discover the importance of Gut Health?

Over the last thirty years, my research and writing have looked at how we can best improve our outer beauty and inner wellbeing and I have long been fascinated by the increasingly recognised link between the gut and our physical and mental health. Modern science and medicine are only just uncovering the secrets of gut health and why it has the power to totally transform the way we look and feel. I wrote my book on the gut, The Good Gut Guide to bring this research to a wider audience, not just with the science backing it, but also a very practical way of putting this into practise with family-friendly recipes and home-health ideas.

What Gut Friendly tips do you employ daily? Fermenting etc?

I’ve created a Good Gut checklist of my easy to follow recommendations for good digestive health which I follow myself on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. These include drinking fermented beverages, going organic and taking a daily probiotic. I now start my day with a glass of kefir and always have some kind of ferment on the go in my kitchen!

What’s the simplest tip you could offer people on Gut Health?

By making one small change to your diet in adding a daily dose of probiotics – in the form of plain live yoghurt or fermented foods such as kefir and pickled vegetables – you can make a real difference to your overall health and wellbeing. I love the fact you don’t have to give anything up, but add a bit of goodness into your daily life. Super-easy and very inexpensive too.

Where do you see the future for Gut Health awareness?

I’ve been so amazed (and delighted!) by the response to The Good Gut Guide, which went straight in as the No1 Bestseller on Amazon for Popular Medicine, and the level of interest in the area has seen us recently create a section on gut health on my Liz Earle Wellbeing website too. I think interest in gut health is only going to steadily increase as awareness grows of the role our digestive system plays in determining all-round health and happiness – and word spreads on its benefits. There really is nothing to lose and so much to gain.
