The Gut Stuff Reader:
Hello! I get hormonal acne before my cycle every month and was wondering what sort of foods/vitamins/etc. I should incorporate into my diet to prevent these pesky buggers from popping up each month. Thanks!!!
If there is one thing you need to do, it’s eat the right kind of foods that ensure you are having a poo every day. Why is this so important to skin health, particularly hormonal skin issues?
The reason is that when you have a poo, you expel used hormones from the body. But imagine you don’t have a poo for a couple of days, or three, four etc, then spent hormones are not being excreted from the body and go back into circulation. This means that hormones levels can zoom up to unbalanced levels and can affect skin and mood.
One of the best ways to keep your bowel moving is to have flax seeds with plenty of water each day, and also try to eat a large variety of different vegetables and fruit each day. The fibre and colours in these plants feed the bacteria in your gut. When this bacteria is diverse and balanced you are more likely to have a poo each day. Flax seeds also feed good bacteria to help keep the bacteria balanced, but they also swell up in the digestive tract with water, press against the wall and create a little bounce action, called peristalsis which keeps everything moving along nicely, and increase the chances of healthy well-formed stool delivering spent hormones and toxins out of the body rather than back into you to wreck havoc with hormone levels and skin.
One simple action you could do each day, if you have a powerful blender, is make a green shake such as this with flax seeds, frozen fruit, fresh ginger, and water. Full recipe on my web site here.
