your all in one fermenting kit

your kit contents

Your kit includes the below items – you’ll see we’ve listed how the kit can be used for the ferments featured in our how-to videos, but this by no means exhaustive!

2L jar – kombucha

1L jar – sauerkraut | kimchi | water kefir

500ml – sourdough starter | overnight oats | milk kefir

Gauze & rubber band –  required for milk kefir and kombucha

Burping lid – used for sauerkraut and kimchi. This lid creates an airlock using the screw band of the two-part lid. Self-burping ferment lids have a one-way valve to vent gas automatically whilst fermenting, meaning no manual burping is required.

Two-part lid – used for sourdough starter. The two-part lid allows you to cover the ferment, preventing the mixture from drying out whilst allowing gases to escape.

Screw top lid – used for overnight oats and storing ferments in the fridge.

Weight – used for sauerkraut and kimchi. The weight is used to submerge and hold the packed mixture below the brine. During the first stages of fermentation, CO2 gases are created by bacteria present in your ferment. These CO2 air bubbles get trapped in a tightly packed mixture like vegetable ferments such as sauerkraut or kimchi and cause the mixture to expand and move up and out of the brine. A weight works to submerge the expanding ferment under the brine and force the air bubbles to rise to the surface of the brine, then exit the jar through an airlock.

what else do I need?

Additional kitchen equipment needed for specific ferments is listed and shown in each of our how-to tutorials, which you’ll find here.

SCOBYs (required for kombucha) and grains (required for milk and water kefir) are available to purchase online. Facebook communities are a great place to start to find fellow local fermenters. We recommend doing your research, asking questions and being confident in what you are buying.

For your ingredients, we always recommend buying fresh, local produce where you can!
